Education
& Safety
The
First Virginia Regiment is incorporated as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit
educational organization, and as such has a dual mission of educating
the public at large in addition to re-enacting. To this end, members
frequently appear before local schools, scout troops, and community
and civic events to demonstrate what it was like to live and fight
in George Washington's Army. The Regiment has appeared at programs
for many foreign embassies and dignitaries, as well as the National
Endowment for the Humanities and The National Archives. Several
members are published authors in the fields of Colonial and Military
History while others serve in the Washington D.C. Revolutionary
War Roundtable, an educational forum and discussion group about
the period. The Regiment was honored to have Senator John Warner
give an introduction to our promotional video and in turn we presented
him with the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel, like that held
by our first commander Patrick Henry.
The
Regiment is also a leader in safety and education regarding historic
weapons. Members of the unit have been called upon to make contributions
to safety manuals and to help draw up regulations and legislation
for such organizations as the National Park Service, Virginia State
Parks, Maryland State Parks, and several re-enacting umbrella groups
to which the unit belongs.
